If you were expecting the PS5's compression tech to work wonders on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, we've got bad news for you.
The action adventure weighs in at a whopping 132GB on Xbox Series X, and it ain't much better on PS5. As per the ever-reliable PlayStation Game Size on X (formerly Twitter), it's a 125GB download on Sony's current-gen system.
To be fair, most of us are used to a similar level of chunkiness when it comes to AAA games — but it's still the kind of file size that'll prompt plenty of players to delete one or two titles from their console's SSD.
The bottom line is that it's a big one, and you'll probably need to at least consider making some space ahead of the game's PS5 launch next week, on the 17th April.
Given how good the MachineGames release looks, coupled with how cinematic it is, it's no huge surprise to learn that it's so demanding in terms of storage. But at the same time, we wouldn't have blamed you for thinking that it'd be squeezed down a bit on PS5 — especially since the aforementioned compression tech was pushed as a selling point back in the system's early days.
Will you be making room for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on PS5? Whip that SSD into shape in the comments section below.

That's ridiculous
Can anyone remember the 'promise' of PS5 that game installs would be smaller (because they didn't need to sub-optimally allocate multiple copies of resource files to account for load inefficiency). I've not played the game, so I can't say it's worth it or not - but seriously... how many TB are we meant to own now to play multiple games - across multiple players - on a console. As a family, we're constantly having to decide (with 2TB almost of storage) who can't play their games. And yes - this isn't a Indy problem - or a Bethesda problem - or even a Sony problem.
It's more about - what are we doing with games these days? And yes - I've got too many other games on my console that are as big (if not bigger).
I know this is a first world problem - but I live in the first world.
Until every game reaches Call of Duty or Destiny 2 file sizes I'm not that bothered.
Well expect forza to be even bigger I'm guessing
Fine by me. I only keep one single player game installed at a time so I can focus on that.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare
I think there was also promise that it would be possible to choose which 'parts' of the game you want to keep on disc, like deleting single player campaign component after finishing it. That would be great for some games.
That’s why I bought a 2 tb expansion drive for my PS5 on day one: even with the touted compression, I knew games were still going to be big and didn’t want to have to constantly juggle installed games.
That's big but I installed Ark Ascended over the weekend (uninstalled it the next day) it was a whopping 180GBs. In comparison Robocop was about 40GBs. There's nothing even in Ark but for some dinosaurs and maps.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare to be fair there's a lot of games that are smaller on PS5 than they are on PS4 despite having higher quality assets etc... it's just that a lot of them also got bigger in general
2tb on my pro, with an extra 2tb nvme in the expansion slot and an external 1tb nvme for the ps4 stuff 😀
That’s good news for me boyo’s anticipating a graphical spectacular 👍🏻 didn’t upgrade my internal storage for a crap ton of games I don’t get around to!
@Stepan You can do that in at least some games.
It’s also one of the best looking games on the market right now easily. On PC it looks insane. I got a buddy that is a HUGE Indy fan. But when I played it on Series X i was shocked how good it looked. Game files will continue to rise with all the detail. It’s totally worth your SSD space.
I'm not gonna let the file size bother me because:
A - It's Machine Games.
B - it's id Tech and it looks phenomenal
and C - well it's Indy. Day one no matter the gigabytes!
@MrHabushi Aha, I haven't seen this option yet. It would be great in Tekken for example, which occupies 10s of GB with story videos you needn't to see anymore.
RE compression tech in PS5.
I think its just like the tech in the PS5 to aid with seemless and ultra fast loading speeds - I clearly remember games with load speed comparisons like 8s on Series X compared to 1.5s on PS5.
But Devs have to actually use this tech, and Im not that surprised XBox doesn't appear to be.
To be fair, I will be very, but pleasantly, surprised if Xbox properly utilise the Pros additional power - this for me will indicate whether Xbox are serious about being a 3rd party, or are just lazily porting for cash.
Great game, near the end on the series X
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare They can not make dev use the decompression block correctly or at all !
@Stepan @Stepan @Stepan And u can do that on some games but it is up to the devs !
@Dan12836666 I’ve allocated 179gb space ready for it! You never know, it might be 174gb ha
I was wondering if the physical version of Indy circles on ps5 would contain a working version of the full game on disc but I guess the answer to that is no.
All that this suggests to me is that Bethesda has done a fairly basic port. I get the sense that very little attempt was made to actually “optimise” the PS5 version.
My internal SSD still has 520GB of free space. And I imagine that more people will invest in an SSD expansion as games get larger and more complicated.
But after all, if I was really interested in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, then I would have undoubtedly bought the XBox version by now.
@Matthewnh
Not sure what the hell a file size has to do with how good a port is. I'm playing the game on PC at the moment and it's 114 GB there.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare many games on Xbox vs PS are smaller on PS. They did what they said.
Wouldn’t be too bad if at least a large proportion of that was on the physical disc, but nothing is. What a waste
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare But they are smaller.
Can anyone remember the promise of the world's most powerful console the series x and how it gets its ass handed to it by PS5 for the past 4 years straight and the promise that it would do 60fps minimum on all games forward as the new standard, when that isn't even true for its own studio's games?
Again, PS5 games ARE SMALLER than the other platform that has the near identical looking game just about every single time, sometimes it's even significantly smaller too.
What were you trying to say with that nonsense?
@andrewsqual why are you so defensive/aggressive? - This is a playstation site, I'm talking about how this gen was accompanied by comments about game size on disk - I'm not making any comparisons between other platforms. It was a general comment based on the initial spiel for more optimal use of resources - and I also understand that this was specifically talking about PS4 vs PS5. My comment was talking about the huge size of games, and you focus on that part because you think I'm attacking PlayStation?....
@PCPS4XB Once again - my comment wasn't an attack on PlayStation - what is it with the hyper defensiveness? Their comments were not related to improvements over other platforms - it was saying the advantage of current gen over PS4 was that game sizes would be smaller. My point was - at the start of this gen, games used to be huge when they were 50GB... it wasn't an attack, but rather an observation about the required sizes of storage required this gen.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare Can anyone remember the 'promise' of PS5 that game installs would be smaller?
Yes, they delivered in the promise, the PS5 version of the same games are smaller, who is getting defensive? I answered your question lol.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare they never said it will be smaller compared to PS4 ( while many cross gen PS5 games are much smaller) but that they can keep their games smaller compared to if they didn't have the current tech. Basically we would have even bigger games if they decided to stay with the older tech. There's nothing to defend here, they either kept their word or didn't.
Imagine how big games would be without the Kraken compression block in the console!
But this growth in the size of games is the reason I put an extra 4TB WD Black in my PS5 Pro when I upgraded.
This game is basically instant load time. The instant you press start, you are in the game - and you never see a load screen again.
Heck I think even fast travel is instant.
It makes sense why the file size is so big - to ensure there is zero load time dealing with massive decompression efforts.
And sure, while Sony can get that right for its own games and keep thins smaller, this was initially developed around Xbox and PC, and there was only so much MachineGames could do to get that part right - it wasn’t designed with hardware Kraken in mind.
IIRC with past Wolfstein* games they were pretty much uncompressed to stop people pirating the game (big game size, less likely to pirate.) If I'm wrong, let me know 😂
*I bring this up bcause same devs
Sizes won’t be smaller the further games and assets grow with more polygons. It’s a delicate balance to get the consoles to do what they do for a very reasonable price. People just need to learn patience and install what they desire to presently play. Not a big deal. If it is just to buy more storage options which are available. Besides this game appears to be quality based off of the Xbox release.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare They ARE smaller. For many games which support both PS4 and PS5 the latter version is reduced in size, despite often having more raw assets.
That is achievable thanks to texture compression. But this is something developers must opt-in to use; it will not happen automatically
I have 2.6TB of storeage on my PS5.
With a 8Tb HDD for my PS3 and PS4 games. I can also store PS5 games for transferring back to PS5 with no redownloading. My PS5 Pro has 4Tb thanks to a Samsung 2TB NVMe drive. I don't have worries for now, with about 50% storage used on both HDD and NVMe.
In the USA, Christmas Black Friday has the best and lowest price sales. Only the console and maybe 8% of games are must have day one purchases. I would not buy the rest without deep sales from Black Friday.
